Plane

Plane flew into theaters this past weekend, and with it we got the first action movie of the year. Gerard Butler plays Captain Torrance who must put all of his skills to the test to land his plane safely when it is struck by lightning. He manages to land the plane safely on a small island, where the problems just get worse. Captain Torrance has to quickly figure out how to save all of his passengers from militia groups and get them home safely.

What follows is The Good, The Bad, and The Spoilers of Plane.

The Good

Plane does an amazing job of keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire film. Almost anyone who has flown in bad turbulence knows the tension that builds up waiting to get through it. Plane does a great job capturing that stress and amplifying it by actually having the airplane go down. While the film is called Plane, a great deal of the story is spent with the passengers stranded fighting for their lives. The pace the movie managed to keep with the action was impressive. While there were slow points in the film, they were not drawn out or boring and were always quickly followed by suspense or more violence.

The Bad

One of the worst parts of Plane is the believability. Suspension of disbelief is required in a lot of action films, but Plane is still just hard to believe. We are forced to accept that any plane could possibly fall out of the sky anytime it goes through a storm.

I was also left wanting more back story on both Captain Torrance and the prisoner Louis Gaspare. We are given some glimpses at their backstory, which were all intriguing and perfect for the set of skills their characters needed in the film. However, I felt more could have been included. I also wish I could have seen what happened to Louis Gaspare at the end of the film when he takes the money and disappears into the forest.

My Overall Opinion

I give Plane a 7 out of 10.

Plane is a “brain candy” film. It is not groundbreaking, but it is very entertaining. A great action film to kick off 2023, filled with the perfect amount of explosions and violence. If you are looking for a movie to see, you will have a lot of fun at Plane. Although my recommendation would be to wait until this one inevitably hits a streaming service.
